CBS 3 in Philadelphia recently ran a story about the potential health hazards found in many cosmetic products. Actually, the risks are found in many commonly known name brand shampoos, conditioners, cleansers etc. The interview revealed that FDA doesn’t review or approve cosmetics and hence do not be surprised to find harmful chemicals like phthalates or parabens in many of your personal care products.
Europe already banned the use of many harmful chemicals but US only prohibits a handful. It is very scary to know that many lipsticks has ingredients linked to reproductive and organ toxicity. The special report listed Environmental Working Group as an organization that provides makeup checkup. It is called skin deep.
On this site, you can search by category of personal care products & they rate each product’s hazardous level from low hazard (scale 0-2), moderate hazard (scale 3-6) and high hazard (scale 7 to 10). Very but frightening impressive list.
What I find interesting is that well known “organic” products are in the moderate hazard scale. Goes to show that you should read the labels carefully before paying more for “organic” products.
Below are a few examples :
J & J Buddies No More tears, easy to comb shampoo – scale 5
Johnsons Lavender baby Shampoo – scale 5
CVS Baby Shampoo Tear Free – scale 4
Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo – scale 4
Avalon Organic Gentle tear-free shampoo, baby wash – scale 3
Jason Natural Cosmetics Earth’s Best shampoo & body wash – scale 3
Huggies Tear Free Baby Shampoo, extra sensitive – scale 3
California Body Shampoo & Bodywash Tea tree & lavender – scale 1
Organic Blessings Little angel shampoo/body wash – scale 0
Mind blowing list. Check out the list for oral care, hair care etc…. The list for fragrances were shocking too. I stayed up all night looking through it and my husband and I went to bed with a very heavy heart. God helps us all.
