Making the Most of Staples Rewards- It’s Easy!

September 26th, 2009

My second favorite non-credit card rewards program has to be Staples Rewards program. It’s free to join and easy. Fill out a simple form, either online or in the store. If you do fill out the membership form in the store, be sure to make a matching online account to track your savings progress.

What do you get for your five minute investment of time setting up these accounts?

  1. $3 back on cartridges- Probably the best deal Staples offers, (which is one reason this rewards program is a favorite) is $3 back on every ink cartridge you recycle with them up to 10 per calendar month. They accept any brand. Simply drop take these in to your local Staples. At the register, let the cashier scan your rewards card. (Keep the reciept just in case).  In a few days you’ll see the rewards reflected in your online account. These rewards on ink cartridges are sent each month, usually around the last week of the month. You can choose to have them sent to you via postal or email.
  2.  10 % Cash Back Rewards- On all ink, toner, case and ream paper and Copy & Print center, you’ll earn ten percent cash back. Often, on top of this, Staples will run special promotions giving even more cash back when you purchase these items. So watch circulars for these events, because you can reap as much as 20% or more during one of these sales.
  3.  Special Savings to Members-From time to time, there will be added discounts or extended rewards to Staples members.
  4. No Limit Rewards- There is not a limit on how much you can earn in rewards, though if you do spend more than a thousand dollars in a calendar year, you’ll be upgraded to a higher level of reward program, (Premium Status)  giving you additional savings and allowing you to recycle more ink cartridges, increased cash back rewards, etc.
  5.  Free Delivery- Orders of $50 or more earns free delivery. Sometimes there are additional shipping specials for rewards program members. Watch sale flyers for these “members deals”

Staples Rewards (not Recycle Rewards) are mailed within 30 days after the end of the calendar quarter, and you have until the last day of the calendar quarter to redeem your issued rewards. Staples Rewards must be spent at any Staples store, Staples.com or by phone at 1-800-333-3330 by the expiration date printed on your Staples Rewards.

Typically, Ebates rewards provides a standard discount of 2% back on Staples.com orders. If you keep your purchases to qualifying purchases and use Ebates to launch the order, you’ll earn at least 12% back- plus recycle cartridge cash. Toss your rewards credit card in there to make the purchases and you’ve now really found ways to stretch your cash!

Are You Missing Out on Cash? Maximizing CVS Rewards

September 24th, 2009

Are you looking to save money? Today, nearly everyone is. You may have heard the frequent buzz words regarding CVS and Staples. Other than a cursory use at the checkout of your membership cards, you may not know what else to do with them. Why are they such a big deal? How do you maximize rewards ?

For starters, each card has multiple means to save. You should know the basics for saving success. They’ve been ranked as top non-credit cards means to save. And if you couple them with a rewards credit card, you’ll be able to do what is called “stacking” or adding your savings up in diverse means. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not using their store reward cards fully because they aren’t aware of the values available.

The second biggest blunder is not using a rewards credit card for necessary purchases. I was raised with the thought process that a credit card was for emergencies only. While that’s certainly a good use of a credit card, it’s not the best advice anymore. Most credit cards, particularly Discover, now offer points, cash back and extra savings on a regular basis. If you use your credit card only for emergencies, you’ll miss out on cash back for necessary purchases. The key of course, is to use your card within a budget and to pay the balance off each month.   Use both credit cards and store reward cards and you’ll stack up those savings effortlessly.

CVS- Has a program called ExtraCare Rewards. Like most of these store reward programs, it’s free to sign up. You should also go online and make or attach your current card to an online account. By doing so, you’ll receive coupons and added savings via email or mail each month.

CVS has specials on the amount you’ve spent as well as products that give you extra points. In general, you earn about 2% back on most purchases. This is given quarterly in the way of reward money to be used online or in stores. You will also be able to check your upcoming rewards via your online account, like the one I’ve received below:

Description   Balance Earned   End Date   Reward Details

SUMMER 2009 SPENDING   $177.74   09/16/2009   2% of your Summer 2009 Spend will be issued on October 1st. Rewards are redeemable in-store and online.

  2009 FE – DEANS MILK   $1.00   07/26/2009   Redeemable in-store only.

Also, you’ll want to view the CVS website every Sunday or check out the savings in the Sunday paper.  CVS has coupons online as well as in their Sunday circulars. Often these are quite different and you’ll save a bundle if you look both places for coupons.

You’ll also see notices that state, ECB (or ExtraCare Bucks). These are added coupons that print like cash, after you’ve bought the item.

Last week, for instance, 2% milk was on sale for $1.99, and had an added ExtraCare Buck at purchase. This meant, you paid $1.99, but got a dollar back in the way of these ECBs printed at the register, bringing the total cost down to only $.99 for a gallon of milk. I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long time since I’ve spent a buck for a gallon of milk. That’s savings, real savings.

Did you know more than half the people who get ECB’s forget to use them or discard them? The stores count on people doing so. They also bank on people making return visits to use their ECB’s on future purchases. It’s a fact that every time you enter a store, even with a list, you’re likely to add a few things and spend more. Make less trips and use ECB’s and you’ll really save.

Here’s how to beat the system:

Make a list of all items that carry ExtraCare Bucks you want to buy.

Make a separate list of those items that don’t carry ECB’s you but need or want.

Match coupons from manufacturers to as many products as possible. (Yes, CVS also takes coupons from other sources. Their registers are set to accept BOTH a manufacturers coupon AND a store coupon for EACH item) (whoot!)

At the register, have the employee ring up only those items that carry an ECB first.

Use your ExtraCare bucks and coupons to buy what else is in the cart.

Not only have you saved in cash, you’ve saved in gas for another trip and in impulse buying in future purchases.

Also, don’t forget that you do earn ECB’s for Prescriptions! You get one ExtraCare Buck for every TWO prescriptions.  If you forget to use your ExtraCare Card at the time of purchase for prescription medicines, you can still take your receipts later into CVS and have these credited to your rewards. ECB’s for scripts are usually included in your quarterly rewards.

Tomorrow- Easy tips for using Staples Rewards!

A Harvest of Meijer Coupons

September 23rd, 2009

Autumn is settling in upon North America and it brings to mind the idea of cozy nights and warm fireplaces, tailgating parties and Halloween. On occasion, I send a recipe your way that evokes a bit of the season. Being the cost conscious person I am, these are usually fairly thrifty and quick for us moms to throw together.

In light of the chilly days ahead, here’s a family favorite- made low fat  for those of you watching the winter calories. Baked Potato Soup, takes less than thirty minutes from start to finish, (if you have leftover baked potatoes, that is) and is a hearty frugal feast for the family. Following this recipe, I’ve added the plentiful harvest of Meijer Coupons for the week. In case you’ve not visited their website, there’s a ton of delicious recipes, coupons, cooking advice and printable shopping lists.  Every week, you’ll find updated coupons, which differ from the ones in stores and are often in addition to the flyers.

I guarantee you’ll get lost in their site for hours on end. Enjoy!

Baked Potato Soup

Ingredients

  • 4 lg Baking potatoes
  • 6 tb Cornstarch
  • 8 c Skim milk
  • 2 tb Olive oil
  • 4 Green onions; chopped
  • 1 c Light sour cream
  • 1 c bacon; cooked
  • 5 oz Lowfat cheddar cheese;
  • Salt and pepper

Preparation

Heat oven to 450F degrees and bake the potatoes until fork tender (1 hour). In a large bowl mix the cornstarch and skim milk until smooth. Pour into large pot and add olive oil. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil over medium heat. Whisk in salt and pepper. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens. Cut potatoes in half, scoop out the meat and set aside. When milk mixture is very hot, whisk in potato. Add 3 green onions. Whisk well, add light sour cream. Heat thoroughly. Add cheese a little at a time until all is melted in. Serve. Top with cooked bacon, a spoonful of sour cream, sprinkles of cheese and green onion.

Coupon Surfing

September 21st, 2009

There’s a tremedous value in knowing where to look for good coupons. Not only do you save cash, but looking in the right places yields a plentiful supply, which ultimately saves you time. One of my favorite stops is Coupon Surfer. For those of you who are otherwise uninitiated, Coupon Surfer is a simple way to add coupons to your cache by signing up for an e-newsletter, delivered right to your inbox. Unlike many sites, this one is light on the signup, easy on the searching and not full of endless garbage aimed at getting you to buy products or spams you with ads. Not only do you save time trolling though a site, you can view the emails each day to decide if you need any of these items, without hopping a link. I like this because I don’t have to waste time logging somewhere, only to find none of the newest deals were interesting or necessary in my world. Print out is snap, (no major coupons software), other than a one -time 5 second download.

A one page sign up you’re in! You can even customize your search or delivery of specific types of coupons to be delivered in your newsletter. You’ll get these everyday around midnight Central Time.  Below you’ll find a few of today’s coupons from Coupon Surfer, along with the link to the site. P & G Brand Saver Headed Your Way…

September 18th, 2009

pg brand saver september 27  Coming your way September 27th- Proctor and Gamble, also known as P & G to the fans of Tide, Downy, Covergirl, Pantene, Oil of Olay, NyQuil and hundreds of top products are soon to release their monthly “Brand Saver” on September 27th.  This coupon packed booklet, in Sunday papers hosts tons of savings on P & G products. You’ll find a savings of an estimated $93.00 this month. But don’t be satisfied with that savings alone. Watch K-Mart for their Double Coupon days which usually coincide with P & G’s release of Brand Saver booklets. In my part of the country, K-Mart offers a once a month “double coupon” week, beginning on a Sunday-Saturday. Last time a P & G Brand Saver was released, it was the following week.

Other places to aim for double coupons are Meijer, Krogers, Scotts, Safeway. These vary state and even county by county, so check with your stores and call around to find out particulars. Questions to ask, “Do you offer double coupons?” “If so, is it a promotional event or every day occurance?” “What is the limit on double coupons” (i.e, Up to $.50? Up to $ 1.00?)  Finding this out in advance can save you money as you’ll know how and when to use those valuable P & G coupons, as well as other coupons offered from other manufacturers.  One of the reasons I’m fond of KMarts double deals is their high limit on double coupons. In my neck of the woods, coupons are doubled up to $3.00. Which can be a ton of money off your products.

Here’s the deal on my regions KMart double deals, (but you’ll need to check with your local Kmart for their specifics)

Super Double Manufacturer Coupons up to & Including $1.00, $2.00 or $3.00 Value depending on location, dates and store types.
Amount of Credit from doubling a coupon cannot exceed the retail price of an item. No cash or in-store purchase credit will be awarded for any amount exceeding the retail price of the item. Limit 1 coupon for each item purchased. Only 1 coupon will be doubled per item. Normally, you may only purchase 4 of the same items using double coupons. Coupons do not apply to sales tax. Limit 10, 25 or 75 coupons per customer per day depending on current promotion.

Also, another goodie from K-Mart to print out now and hang on to for such a sales event is two $5.00 coupons (good for $5.00 off $50.00 purchase)  at KMart, simply by signing up for their email newsletter.

Here’s the sample form below, which isn’t too invasive, takes a moment to complete and voila! you’ve stuck ten bucks in KMart gold.  The link for your ten bucks savings is http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/nb_10151_10104_NB_EmailSignup?aff=Y&sid=KAx20050801×13xSlickdeals

New perks and affordable beauty at Makeup.com!

September 15th, 2009

Huge SALE Starting NOW (Sept 15-22) at Makeup.com. Find over 1400 goodies at half off! Actually, you won’t “find” them at 50%.  Half off prices are not reflected until you enter the code and update the shopping cart. When I first checked this out, I did see several sale sections, but was disappointed that these 1400 half off products weren’t filling the pages of Beauty.com. In testing this theory out, I entered the code BIGSALE50 and voila! Half off prices appeared like wildfire in my cart. I’m not a shopper who likes to pay $24.00 for Borghese lipstick, (sorry, that’s a ridculous price for anything that goes near my mouth that isn’t food) but admittedly, it’s a great product. However, at half off I can allow myself a perk.

In addition, Makeup.com has started a rewards program, (2%) and a points system.  Which if you peek at their site, they’ve carefully notified you how many points it takes to buy a product with points only. Somehow, 1400 points seems like a ton, just to get a free Bobbi Brown product. You can elect to have the 2% applied as cash, or use points 1 point, per dollar spent, toward items. My advice, use the rewards cash toward the products, unless you’ve got 1400 dollars to drop on random cosmetics. If you were dropping that much money, I doubt you’d care about free points or rebates, you’d be on the beach near Demi Moore, chatting about what to wear to the next Academy Awards. For normal humans, there’s another option to earn points.  This of course involves work to get free makeup. But hey, a woman’s gotta do, what a woman’s gotta do to look beautiful, right? (Even if it means hounding others to spend money on your behalf)

Here’s how to get extra points:

Can I earn extra points / earn points faster?
You sure can! Login into your Makeup.com account and use the Refer-A-Friend option to tell all your friends about us. If they create an account and place an order, You earn 250 Beauty Bonus Points – how cool is that? These points will be awarded to you once every month based on that month’s referrals. You will receive an email letting you know if you have earned additional points.

From time to time, watch for special Bonus Point promotions, surveys, & offers for a chance to earn additional points.

So ladies, begin a list of all your friends you want to harrass into buying beauty products at Makeup.com. Also, while your in mood to shop beauty products…don’t forget competitor, “Beauty.com” is also offering a 50% off sale on many items as well. This partner of drugstore.com, allows you to share products to fufill an order. Start on drugstore.com’s site and flip over to their beauty partner, as it’s easier to navigate and reward points are shared, as is shipping. (And again, use Ebates account to access and rewards credit card to double your savings).

Hot Couture:15 Bucks or Less? Yes!

September 15th, 2009

Who says you have to pay a fortune to be trendy, hot and stylish? The clothing experts at Hot Couture would disagree. Ladies, (contain yourselves) NOTHING at this site is over $15. Shop junior’s clothes and enjoy jeans, pants, skirts, dresses and shirts all fifteen bucks or LESS. Take a gander at their clearance for eight dollar tops, (suggested retail over $30.00). Newest at the Hot Couture line are shoes. I’ve been a shopper at this site for some time. Admittedly, I might be a little old for short, shorts or skin tight skirts, but there’s ample selection for cool mommies to look “hot” without being over the top…

Sizes run small, so factor that in when ordering. I wear a size 0 or 3 from most sites. AT  Hot Couture, I always wear a 3. If you run in between sizes, order up. Exchanges, however, are seamless and easy. Enjoy the deals, put together a career look or shop casual. You’ll love this site and their savings. I’m really in love with their jeans. After shopping with my daughter, who loves brand names and brand name prices, I’m relieved I can still buy jeans at the rollback prices form Hot Couture.

Currently, their clearance items are still available in most sizes, but they won’t last long. However, this is one site you can buy full price without feeling buyer’s remorse later. If you try Hot Couture, login and leave me a comment. I’d love to hear if you loved it as much as I do. Happy savings and shopping~
