Give a Book

give a book

Occasionally My Cool Mommy touches on charitable organizations. As we celebrate birthdays or holidays, I’d like to mention one that tugs at my heartstrings. Since we do talk about money frequently here, and the wise Cool Mommy spending of it, I’d like to mention this charity. I think it’s an investment that goes a long way.  The Give-a-Book Foundation targets children here in the USA and in other far reaching areas, such as Costa Rica, with the aim to provide reading age appropriate reading material. We are a family of readers around here, and the thought of households with no books seems a shocking perspective. Yet the statistics are an estimated 61 percent of all children in low income families have no books.  As a child, in a turbulent home, books were my escape and refuge. At times they were my only friends. My own children are avid readers, (almost rabid in bookstores and libraries). It’s difficult to imagine our home without row upon row of overstuffed bookshelves and children nestled up reading in various nooks of the house.  Yet, more than half of low income families, struggling to provide for children’s immediate needs cannot attest to the same home life we have.

I’d like to offer this as a suggestion, when struggling for a birthday or holiday gift idea. Why not donate a book for a child through the Give-a-Book Foundation? You’d be giving the gift of lifelong learning, hope and love a child in special circumstances needs. Give-a-Book Foundation is a registered 50l c (3) tax deductable organization and public charity.
